Arerti sits in Ethiopia's Afar region, a territory of low plains, volcanic ridges and long dry seasons. On a map the town is compact, a modest cluster of streets and compounds set against wide stretches of empty ground. The roads that reach out from it are few and direct. They exist to connect settlements across long distances, not to fill a dense urban grid.
That sparseness gives the drawing its character. Large cities crowd the frame with detail, but Arerti leaves room: a handful of streets near the centre, a scattering of buildings, then tracks thinning out toward the edges. In black and white the empty space reads as landscape, a reminder of how large the Afar lowlands around the town are.
