Ariyānkuppam lies just south of Puducherry town, across the river that shares its name. On a map, it is a close network of streets and lanes on the southern bank, gradually giving way to coconut groves, fields and water. Toward the coast, the river widens into an estuary and backwaters before meeting the Bay of Bengal.
The area has a notable place in history. Arikamedu, on the river nearby, was an ancient trading port where archaeologists found evidence of contact with the Roman world, including Roman pottery. Today, the town is closely tied to Puducherry, linked by bridges and roads, while its southern and eastern edges remain much greener and more open.
