Arroyomolinos was a small farming village in the south-west of the Community of Madrid until recent decades. Then it became one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Spain, and the map shows that story clearly. A compact historic centre sits among wide, curving streets of newer housing. These are laid out around roundabouts and green strips, as in many of Madrid's outer suburbs.
One of the town's oldest structures is a medieval defensive tower, a reminder of the centuries before the suburbs arrived. At the other end of the timeline, the Xanadú shopping and leisure complex on the edge of the municipality covers a huge area. It contains an indoor ski slope, an unusual sight on the dry Castilian plain.
