Árta Map Poster
Árta sits in Epirus, in north-western Greece, on a pronounced bend of the Arachthos River. The old town occupies the land inside that curve, so on a map the river nearly encircles it. Streets climb and turn in a dense, irregular pattern that dates from centuries of continuous settlement, while newer quarters spread out along the roads beyond.
The town stands on the site of ancient Ambracia and later served as the capital of the medieval Despotate of Epirus. Its Byzantine churches, including the Panagia Parigoritissa, and the castle on the riverbank recall that period. On an Árta map poster these layers appear as a compact core held in place by the strong line of the water.
Just west of the centre, the old stone Bridge of Árta crosses the Arachthos. It is known throughout Greece through a folk ballad about its builder's wife, sealed into its foundations so that the bridge would stand. On the map the crossing is a small mark, yet it sits at the heart of the region's stories.
