Ashland sits west of Boston in the MetroWest region, a New England town where roads follow old property lines and the shape of the land rather than a grid. On a map it reads as a small centre near the railway, with curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs spreading into woods and around water.
Water is everywhere here. The Sudbury River runs through town, and the Ashland Reservoir and the edges of the Hopkinton Reservoir add large, irregular shapes to the map, with state park land along their shores. The commuter rail line cuts a firm diagonal through the middle.
