Ashta lies in Sehore district in Madhya Pradesh, on the Malwa plateau between Bhopal and Indore. The Parbati river flows near the town, and on a map its curving course provides a natural edge to the settlement, contrasting with the roads that cross the landscape in straighter lines.
The town has a dense older centre, where narrow streets bend and branch around markets and temples, surrounded by newer residential areas laid out more openly. Beyond them spreads the flat agricultural land typical of Malwa, known for its dark soils and seasonal crops.
