Asinara lies off the northwestern tip of Sardinia, separated from Capo del Falcone near Stintino by a narrow stretch of water. It is long and slender, with a very irregular coastline of bays, coves and rocky headlands. The interior is dry, hilly and open, and the few roads trace a thin line along the island's length.
For more than a century Asinara was closed to the public, first as a quarantine station and then as a penal colony. Its maximum-security prison operated until the late 1990s. That long isolation left the land largely undeveloped, and it is now a national park. The island is known for its small white donkeys, a population of albino asinelli.

Small clusters of buildings from the prison and quarantine era sit at intervals along the coast. They are among the only built marks in the park.
