Caprera Map Poster
Caprera lies in the La Maddalena archipelago off the northeast coast of Sardinia, and it is joined to La Maddalena island by a short causeway across a narrow strait. The island is compact and irregular, its granite coastline deeply notched with inlets and small headlands. Inland it rises to rocky hills, partly covered by pine woods planted over the past century.
Caprera is inseparable from Giuseppe Garibaldi, who bought land here, farmed it and lived on the island for much of his later life. He died here in 1882 and is buried near his house, now a museum known as the Compendio Garibaldino. On a map, the estate sits inland, reached by the main road that runs in from the causeway.
The island is part of the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park, and much of its shoreline is reachable only on foot or by boat. A Caprera map poster shows its broken outline, the thin link to La Maddalena, and the few roads that cross its hills, leaving the rest of the island to rock, scrub and sea.
