Assaré is in the south of Ceará, in the semi-arid backland known as the sertão, close to the Cariri region. The land around it is dry scrub and farmland crossed by seasonal streams, with reservoirs that fill during the rains. On a map the town is a small, clearly defined cluster surrounded by a lot of open space.
The streets form a simple grid around the main church and square, with a few roads leading out across the sertão to nearby towns. At the edges, blocks give way to dirt tracks and field boundaries. The contrast between the dense centre and the empty land around it is the defining feature of the print.
Assaré is known across Brazil as the home of Patativa do Assaré, the popular poet whose verse about life in the sertão took the town's name far beyond Ceará.
