Avon lies west of Hartford in the Farmington River valley. On a map, the valley and the ridges around it set the town's basic shape. The main road runs through the valley floor, with commercial areas along it, and residential streets branch up the gentle slopes on either side.
To the east, Talcott Mountain rises as a long ridge, and the streets stop at its wooded slope. The Farmington River winds through the town, with open land and green space along its banks. On the western side, subdivisions and winding roads extend into the hills, where the landscape becomes more wooded and rural.
