Babīlē lies in eastern Ethiopia, in the Oromia region, on the main road running east from Harar towards Jijiga. On a map the town is laid out along that route, with its streets gathering around the highway and spreading out onto the surrounding flatter ground.
The landscape around it is dry and rocky, with scattered hills and seasonal watercourses. The town's name is also carried by a well-known local mineral water, and the Babile Elephant Sanctuary to the south protects one of the region's remaining elephant populations.
