Bad Pyrmont lies in the valley of the Emmer River in Lower Saxony, surrounded by wooded hills. From above, the town centres on its spa district: the Kurpark with its winding paths, and a long straight avenue lined with trees running through the centre. The streets spread out from there into the valley.
The town's mineral springs have drawn visitors for centuries. In the eighteenth century Pyrmont was one of the most fashionable spas in Europe, with guests including Peter the Great and Goethe. The Kurpark is known for its palm garden, and the baroque Schloss Pyrmont stands within a star-shaped moated fortress next to the park.
