Bad Zwischenahn is defined on the map by the Zwischenahner Meer, a large, almost rounded lake in the Ammerland district near Oldenburg. The town sits on its southern shore, and the lakeside promenade, spa park and jetties give the water's edge a detailed, finely drawn line. Everything else seems to arrange itself around that open oval of water.
Away from the lake, streets fan out into a green, low-rise town with generous gardens. Ammerland is known for its tree and rhododendron nurseries, and the Park der Gärten, created for a state garden show, adds a patch of winding paths on the map. The town is also a moor-mud spa, and its smoked eel is a local specialty.
