Bāghpat sits near the eastern bank of the Yamuna in western Uttar Pradesh, north of Delhi. On a map the river and its broad floodplain lie to the west, braided with channels and sandbars that change with the seasons. The older part of town is a knot of narrow lanes, and roads lead out from it across flat, heavily cultivated land.
Local tradition links Bāghpat to the Mahabharata, as one of the places named in the Pandavas' request for land. Today it is the headquarters of its own district, and its commercial streets serve the surrounding farming villages. The town's closeness to the Delhi region has brought new roads and development along its main routes.
