Bake is a town in Chongqing, the vast municipality in southwest China known for steep hills and deep river valleys. The landscape shapes almost everything here: roads rarely run straight for long, and the built-up area settles where the ground allows it, following valleys and gentler slopes.
On a map this produces an irregular, organic street pattern. Main roads wind to link the town with neighbouring settlements, while smaller lanes climb and turn between clusters of buildings. Terraced farmland and wooded hills surround the centre, leaving open space around the densest lines.
