Baléyara lies in the Tillabéri Region of western Niger, in the dry Sahel country northeast of Niamey. The town is best known across the region for its large weekly market. Traders, herders and buyers come from the surrounding villages and further afield, and livestock and grain change hands alongside everyday goods.
From above, Baléyara is a low, open settlement. Compounds and sandy lanes form an irregular pattern around the centre, and wider tracks lead out in several directions toward outlying villages and grazing land. Seasonal watercourses, common across this landscape, cross the surrounding country and fill only briefly during the rains.
