Bambari is the capital of Ouaka prefecture and one of the larger towns of the Central African Republic, near the geographical centre of the country. It lies on the Ouaka River, part of the Ubangi basin. On a map, the river forms the main natural line, curving past the town with the built-up area arranged along its banks.
The town has a loose, spreading layout typical of the country's regional centres. A few main roads cross it and continue toward other towns, while residential quarters form a looser network of lanes. Around the edges, the urban area fades into savanna, fields and scattered trees, and the river valley gives the terrain its gentle contours.
