Bandar-e Gaz lies in the west of Golestan Province, on the southern edge of Gorgan Bay, a shallow lagoon enclosed from the Caspian Sea by the long, narrow Miankaleh peninsula. On the map, water fills the northern part of the frame, while the town's streets spread across flat coastal land that rises gradually toward the wooded slopes of the Alborz to the south.
The town has a small harbour and has long been tied to fishing and trade on the bay, with farmland around it. Its road network is organised along the main coastal highway running east to west, with a looser pattern of streets branching toward the shore and the fields. The wetlands around the bay are an important stopover for migratory birds.
