Barwāni sits in the southwest of Madhya Pradesh, on the flat Nimar plain a short distance from the south bank of the Narmada. From above, the town is a close cluster of lanes around an older centre. Roads leave it in several directions across farmland, and the land to the south begins its rise toward the Satpura hills.
The Narmada is the landmark that explains the town. The broad river runs east to west to the north, and the fields between river and town are marked by field boundaries, tracks and small streams draining toward it. Barwāni was once the seat of a princely state, and the older core still shows how the town grew outward from that centre.
A Barwāni map poster turns this layout into fine black lines. The dense centre, the roads running out across the plain and the edge of the river valley make a clear composition. South of town, the Jain pilgrimage site of Bawangaja, with its large rock-cut figure, marks the hills where the plain ends.
