Batang is a town in the Chongqing municipality, in the hilly country of the eastern Sichuan Basin. The land here is neither flat plain nor high mountain but an endless sequence of low ridges and shallow valleys. From above, the town's streets fit into that landscape, bending around slopes and following the contours instead of forming a grid.
Around the centre, the map fills with small features: farm roads tracing the ridge lines, ponds and reservoirs in the hollows, and clusters of houses scattered across the countryside.
