Battipaglia lies on the Piana del Sele, the broad coastal plain that opens south of Salerno. Unlike many hill towns of Campania, it grew on flat land, and its centre follows a more regular layout. Straight roads extend into farmland, and the Tyrrhenian coast lies a short distance to the west.
The town took shape in the mid-nineteenth century as an agricultural settlement for families displaced by the 1857 earthquake. It was heavily damaged during the Allied landings at Salerno in 1943 and later rebuilt. Today it is widely associated with mozzarella di bufala, produced from the herds raised across the plain.
