Bawku lies in Ghana's Upper East Region, close to the borders with Burkina Faso and Togo. That position has made it a trading town for a long time, with goods and people crossing between the three countries. The land around it is open savanna, flat or gently rolling, and the map shows a town with a clear centre and roads leading out in several directions.
The central area is compact, organised around the market and main roads. Further out, the settlement becomes looser, with compounds and farms scattered in the savanna and paths between them. The main routes stand out on the map because they are what link Bawku to Bolgatanga and to the border crossings nearby.
