Bayad lies in the Aravalli district of northern Gujarat, in farmland on the edge of the region's low hills. The town centre is dense and irregular, with narrow lanes and closely set buildings around its markets. The main roads leave the centre in several directions, and newer housing extends along them, so the town has a loose star shape from above.
Bayad serves as a local centre for the surrounding villages, which depend largely on agriculture. It is a sub-district headquarters within Aravalli district, which was formed in 2013 from part of Sabarkantha. Like many towns in the region, its daily life revolves around its markets and the farming year.
