Béchar Map Poster
Béchar stands in the northern Sahara of southwestern Algeria, not far from the Moroccan border. On a map the town reads as a compact arrangement of blocks set on open, stony ground, with the course of the Oued Béchar running past the older quarters and a line of palm gardens marking where water has long been within reach. Beyond the last streets, the drawing falls almost silent.
Close to the town rises Djebel Béchar, a bare ridge that gives the setting its backdrop, and roads leave in a few long, straight strokes toward the rest of the country and the Saoura valley to the south. Under French rule the town was called Colomb-Béchar, and it grew as an administrative and military post before becoming the regional capital it is today.
Few places show the relationship between settlement and desert as plainly. Twentieth-century blocks
Much of the town was laid out in regular blocks during the colonial and post-independence decades, so large parts of the centre read as an orderly pattern of straight streets.
Desert roads
Highways leave Béchar in long, nearly straight lines across open ground, among them the route south toward the Saoura valley, and they give the composition its sense of scale.
