Bela Cruz is a municipality in the north of Ceará, in Brazil's Northeast, a short distance inland from the Atlantic coast. The region is low and fairly flat, a semi-arid coastal plain where farmland, scrub and stands of carnaúba palm, the tree that has long supplied Ceará with wax, stretch between towns connected by long, straight roads.
From above, the town itself is compact. Its centre follows the loose grid typical of small towns in the Northeast, with blocks gathering closely around a central area and then thinning toward the edges, where the pattern gives way to lots and rural paths. Beyond, the land opens into a quiet mosaic of fields and open country.
