Timon sits on the eastern bank of the Parnaíba River, the natural border between Maranhão and Piauí. Directly opposite lies Teresina, the capital of Piauí, and the two cities form one connected urban area split by the water. Bridges carry road and rail traffic across, and a large share of Timon's residents work or study on the other side.
From above, the river is the defining feature. It bends past the town in a broad, meandering line, with the grid of Timon filling the land to the east. The streets are mostly regular and low-rise, extending outward over flat ground toward the open country of Maranhão.
