Codó Map Poster
Codó lies in the interior of Maranhão in northeastern Brazil, on the Itapecuru River. From above, the river curves through the landscape, and the town spreads along its bank, with the older streets close to the water and newer neighbourhoods extending inland. Around it, the land opens out into farmland, pasture and patches of woodland.
The town is a regional centre for the surrounding rural area, and the river has long shaped its life and trade. Codó is also widely known in Brazil for its Afro-Brazilian religious traditions, particularly Terecô, which are closely associated with the town and its history.
