Belfort Map Poster & Print
Belfort sits in the Belfort Gap, the low corridor between the Vosges and the Jura that has served for centuries as a route between the Rhine and the Rhône. The Savoureuse river runs north to south through the city. On its east bank the compact old town lies at the foot of a rocky outcrop crowned by the citadel.
The fortifications were reworked by Vauban, and the city is famous for resisting a long siege in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to 1871. That siege is commemorated by the Lion of Belfort, a huge red sandstone sculpture by Bartholdi carved into the cliff below the citadel. Its outline faces the city.
A Belfort map poster shows the full layering of the city: the angular bastions and star-shaped outworks around the citadel, the tight old streets beneath them, and the wider nineteenth-century and modern districts spreading west of the river. The river runs through the middle of Belfort, dividing the fortified old town on the east from the larger districts that grew up on the west bank.
Lion of Belfort
Bartholdi's lion, carved into the sandstone below the citadel, commemorates the 1870 to 1871 siege. It sits right where the fortress meets the old town.
