Planoise Map Poster & Print
Planoise is a large residential district on the western side of Besançon, in eastern France. From above, it looks very different from the city's historic centre inside the loop of the Doubs. Instead of old streets squeezed by river and citadel, Planoise shows the planning of the later twentieth century: wide curving roads, large blocks set back from the street and generous open spaces between buildings.
The district was built largely from the late 1960s onwards as part of a national programme of new urban housing. It is one of the largest neighbourhoods in Besançon, with schools, shops and sports facilities planned alongside the housing.
On the map, Planoise appears as a distinct area of long building footprints and looping access roads, surrounded by greenery. A Planoise map poster reflects a different kind of urban history from the postcard centre, and for many residents it is the one that defines their experience of the city.

Open spaces
Lawns, courtyards and planted areas fill the gaps between buildings, so the map shows a lighter, more open texture than older districts.
Western edge
Planoise sits towards the edge of the city, where the built-up area begins to give way to greener land. This gives the map a natural border on some sides.
