Beni Amrane is in Boumerdès Province in northern Algeria, inland from the Mediterranean coast. Here the land rises toward the hills of Kabylie. The Isser river crosses the area on its way to the sea. The main route from Algiers toward Tizi Ouzou also follows this valley, so the town sits on an old line of travel.
From above, Beni Amrane does not form a neat grid. Its streets bend around the contours of the hillside and drop in steps toward the valley floor. The flatter land nearby is divided into fields and orchards. The river, the road and the railway make long lines that the town's shorter streets connect to.
