Berkley is a small city in Oakland County, Michigan, just north of Detroit and west of Royal Oak. It sits on the regular survey grid that shapes the whole region, with mile roads running east to west, and from above it looks like a dense, even mesh of residential streets with modest houses on narrow lots. Almost every block is a variation on the same pattern.
Most of the town was built in the first half of the twentieth century as Detroit's suburbs expanded, and many of its bungalows and brick houses date from that period. The main commercial streets are Twelve Mile Road and Coolidge Highway, where shops and restaurants form a walkable downtown. Woodward Avenue, the region's historic main road, runs along the eastern side.
A Berkley map poster is all about rhythm. Short blocks repeat across the frame, broken only by the main roads, a few parks and schools, and the large open space of Roseland Park Cemetery. It is a strong graphic image, and in the Noir style the grid becomes a pattern of fine white lines on black.
