Betroka is in the Anosy region of southern Madagascar, on the high, open grassland that separates the central plateau from the dry south. On a map the town is a small, compact cluster. A handful of streets meet around a centre, with the main road passing through, and wide open country surrounds it on every side.
The region is cattle country, and towns like Betroka have long served as markets and stopping places on the routes between the highlands and the south coast. Roads are long and sparse here, so the town's links to the wider island appear as a few firm lines across the plain. Rivers and seasonal streams add curves to the empty ground.
