Bhāndāria is a town in Pirojpur district in the Barisal Division of southern Bangladesh, the administrative centre of its upazila. It lies in the low, water-rich country of the Ganges delta, where rivers and tidal channels divide the land into islands and peninsulas, and where boats have long been as important as roads for moving people and goods.
From above, water is the organising principle. The town sits along a river, with the market and main streets close to the bank and landings for boats. Smaller canals branch off into the surrounding countryside, and roads often run on raised embankments, tracing lines through a patchwork of paddy fields, ponds and village homesteads shaded by trees.
