Biantang is a town in northern Jiangsu Province, in the level farming country east of Xuzhou. This part of China is a broad alluvial plain crossed by rivers, canals and drainage channels, and settlements here tend to take neat, straight forms shaped by roads and irrigation lines.
On a map, the town appears as a concentrated block of streets, with main roads running in clear directions and smaller lanes filling the spaces between. Around it, the pattern of the countryside is strongly geometric: rectangular fields, long straight ditches, and village clusters spread at intervals across the plain.
