Bir Jdid is a town in the Casablanca-Settat region, on the flat agricultural plain behind Morocco's Atlantic coast, between Casablanca and El Jadida. On the map, the town forms a compact centre with a regular pattern of streets, and beyond it large fields spread out in a patchwork broken only by country roads and scattered rural houses.
The name translates roughly as new well, a reminder of how important water has been in this farming country. The land around it is worked intensively, and the map shows this as a fine, even texture of plot boundaries, very different from the denser streets of the town.
