Bjelovar is a town in northern Croatia, between the Bilogora hills and the plains of the Pannonian basin. It was founded in the mid-eighteenth century as a planned military town of the Habsburg Military Frontier. That origin still shapes its map very clearly. The old centre is a regular grid of straight streets, laid out by military engineers, with a large rectangular square at its heart.
The main square is unusually large for a town of this size, a sign of its military past. It was originally used as a parade ground, and today it is a park lined with public buildings and a church. Around the planned core, later growth spread outward in a less regular way, and railway and road links reach toward Zagreb and the surrounding region.
A Bjelovar map poster shows one of the clearest examples of eighteenth-century town planning in Croatia.
