Bloomfield sits just north of Hartford in central Connecticut. Suburban neighbourhoods, open fields and woodland share its map in roughly equal measure. Roads fan out from a modest town centre, with a few main routes linking to Hartford and the neighbouring towns. Streets curve through the residential areas rather than forming a strict grid, giving the plan a relaxed, spreading shape.
Along the western edge rises Talcott Mountain, part of the long Metacomet Ridge, and its steep ground leaves a band almost free of streets. Penwood State Park covers part of that ridge. The town was originally known as Wintonbury and was incorporated as Bloomfield in 1835. Its old farmland can still be seen in the open spaces between newer subdivisions.
