Bougaa lies in the northern part of Sétif province, where the flat high plains start giving way to hills and mountain ridges. That transition shows clearly on a map. Streets do not run in long straight lines here; they bend to follow slopes, and the town spreads in an irregular shape that reflects the ground beneath it rather than a planner's ruler.
Under French administration the town was known as Lafayette, a name that still appears in older atlases and records. Today it serves as a local centre for the surrounding farmland and hill villages. The main roads leading out toward Sétif and the mountains to the north act as the backbone of the plan, with residential lanes branching off on either side.
