Bouïra lies on a high plain in northern Algeria, south of the Djurdjura mountains that separate it from the heart of Kabylie. On a map, the town spreads across fairly level ground. The older centre has a regular grid of streets, and newer neighbourhoods spread outward along the main roads. The foothills rise to the north, and farmland stretches away in the other directions.
The town is the capital of its province and stands on one of Algeria's key routes. The East–West Highway passes nearby and links it with Algiers and the cities to the east. Djurdjura National Park, with its limestone peaks and cedar forests, lies within easy reach to the north.

Algeria's main highway passes close to the town. On the print it appears as a strong, continuous line connecting Bouïra to the rest of the north.

North of town the ground rises toward the Djurdjura range, and the map opens up into sparse roads and wide empty space.
