Boukadir lies in the valley of the Chelif, Algeria's longest river, a short distance west of the provincial capital of Chlef. From above, the town appears as a compact grid of streets set in open, cultivated land, with the long east–west transport corridor that follows the valley running close by.
The Chelif plain is one of the country's important farming areas, and the land around Boukadir is given over largely to fields and orchards. The region is also prone to earthquakes; the 1980 El Asnam earthquake, named after Chlef's former name, affected the whole valley and led to extensive rebuilding in the years that followed.
A Boukadir map poster keeps the focus on structure. The central streets form a fairly regular pattern, newer neighbourhoods extend outward along the main roads, and beyond them the field boundaries of the valley take over. The river and the hills rising to either side give the image depth without crowding it.
