Bowangshan is in the far south of Sichuan Province, in hilly country near the border with Yunnan and Guizhou. The land is uneven, with ridges, valleys and slopes that people have farmed for a very long time. On a map, the town's streets follow the shape of the ground, and the built-up area gathers on the more level land.
Roads here rarely run straight. They climb in switchbacks and bend along the contours, linking the town with scattered villages and farms in the hills.
