Bowthorpe lies on the western edge of Norwich, and from above it looks unmistakably planned. Rather than a grid or an old market core, the map shows curving distributor roads that loop around clusters of residential closes, cul-de-sacs and footpaths. The layout reflects its origins as a deliberately designed township, built in stages from the 1970s onward to house a growing city population.
Green space threads through the whole area. Pockets of open ground, tree belts and playing fields separate one neighbourhood from the next, and toward the south the land drops to the valley of the River Yare, where marshes and meadows soften the urban edge.
