Brakpan Map Poster & Print
Brakpan grew up on the gold reef of the East Rand around the turn of the twentieth century, and its layout still reflects that origin. The town centre is a regular grid of long, straight streets. Residential suburbs extend in similar blocks, and former mining land breaks the pattern with wide, open spaces.
The name is usually traced to a brackish pan in the area, and water still marks the map. Shallow pans and small dams are scattered around the town, their rounded shapes contrasting with the grid. Tailings dams and mine dumps, some reworked or removed, leave large geometric footprints on the landscape.
Today Brakpan is part of the Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality, connected to Benoni, Springs and Boksburg by main roads and rail. A Brakpan map poster shows a working town from above, with its tidy grid, scattered water and the marks left by a century of mining.
