Brejo Santo is in the south of Ceará, in the Cariri region near the borders with Pernambuco and Paraíba. From above it is a fairly regular grid of streets built on gently rolling ground, with the town spreading along the main roads that pass through it. Beyond the last blocks, the semi-arid countryside of the sertão opens out with scattered farms and dirt tracks.
The name refers to a brejo, a word for a wetter, more fertile patch of land in otherwise dry country, and that points to why a town grew here. The Cariri area is known in the region for its relatively greener land between the plateau and the backlands. On the map, the town reads as a well-defined block of streets with small reservoirs and green patches nearby.
