Brera lies just north of Milan's historic centre, between Castello Sforzesco to the west and the broad streets of the fashion district to the east. On the map it is a small cluster of narrow streets, several of them pedestrian, arranged in an irregular pattern that feels older and finer than the wide avenues surrounding it.
At its heart is the Palazzo di Brera, which houses the Pinacoteca di Brera, one of Italy's major art galleries, as well as the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and a historic library and observatory. Via Brera and Via Fiori Chiari run through the quarter, lined with galleries, studios and small cafés.
