Brighton sits in the western part of Boston. On a map it is an uneven, hilly patchwork of residential streets, not a clean grid. Commonwealth Avenue runs through the south with its streetcar median. The Charles River curves along the northern edge, and Chestnut Hill Reservoir sits as a smooth oval at the southern boundary.
Brighton was a separate town until it was annexed by Boston in 1874, and it was known then for its large cattle market. Today it is shared by long-time families, students and young professionals. Boston College owns land in the neighbourhood, and Brighton is usually named together with Allston.
