Brühl lies in the Rhineland between Cologne and Bonn, on the edge of the Ville, a low wooded ridge that runs parallel to the Rhine. The town's centre is compact and walkable, but on the map it is matched by an unusual feature: the formal geometry of the Augustusburg palace gardens, with their straight axes, parterres and avenues extending into the park.
Augustusburg Palace and the smaller hunting lodge of Falkenlust, built for the prince-archbishops of Cologne in the eighteenth century, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. A straight avenue links the two through the park. Brühl is also the birthplace of the painter Max Ernst, whose work is shown in a museum dedicated to him in the town.
On the southern edge of town, the Phantasialand theme park occupies a large, dense block, while the wooded Ville to the west is dotted with small lakes left by former lignite mining. West of town, the wooded ridge holds a chain of small lakes created as former lignite pits flooded, their irregular outlines scattered through the forest.
