Budaka is the chief town of Budaka District in Uganda's Eastern Region, a short distance west of Mbale. This is low, largely flat country on the plains below the Mount Elgon massif. Farming shapes daily life, and the town serves as a trading and administrative centre for the surrounding villages.
From above, Budaka is modest in size. Its centre forms around a main road, with shops and offices along it and smaller lanes behind. Past the built-up area, the map opens onto farmland and low-lying wet ground, crossed by a thinning network of rural roads that lead toward neighbouring towns and trading centres.
