Kira Map Poster & Print
Kira is a municipality in Wakiso District, just east of Kampala, and has become one of the most populous urban areas in Uganda. Like the capital, it is built on a series of rounded hills. From above, the roads follow the ridges and curve down into the valleys, and new housing fills the slopes between them.
Much of Kira's growth has been recent, as people have moved out from Kampala in search of space. The result is a mix of older trading centres along the main roads and newer residential areas with smaller, winding streets. Namugongo, home of the Uganda Martyrs shrine, which draws large numbers of pilgrims each June, lies within the municipality.
