Buerarema is a small municipality in southern Bahia, in the hilly, forested country inland from Ilhéus and Itabuna. From above, the town follows the valley floor. Its streets are packed where the land is flat and thin out as soon as the slopes begin. The surrounding hills show up on the map as a scattering of rural tracks rather than streets.
This part of Bahia is known as cacao country. For generations, the crop has been grown under the shade of taller forest trees, and that way of farming has shaped both the landscape and the region's towns.
